Procedure updated 1 October 2026: for third-country family members joining a third-country sponsor from abroad, the usual first step is the long-stay visa D application, followed by arrival and residence-permit formalities. Who can sponsor family reunification?

The sponsor is the person already settled in Luxembourg: in practice a non-EU national holding a valid residence permit. The qualifying period of lawful residence depends on the sponsor's status. Under the standard route a minimum period applies; EU Blue Card holders are exempt from it under Directive (EU) 2021/1883.

Which family members can join?

• Spouse or registered partner, subject to the minimum age and genuine-relationship conditions.
• Minor children of the sponsor and/or of the spouse. For a child of only one of the two, the consent of the other parent is usually required.
• Dependent ascendants (parents), which is more restrictive: the parents must be genuinely dependent on the sponsor and the file is assessed case by case.

What are the conditions?

EU law (Directive 2003/86/EC) sets the framework that Luxembourg applies. In summary, the sponsor must prove:

• Stable and regular resources, sufficient to support the household without recourse to social assistance. In Luxembourg the benchmark is the social minimum wage; check the current amount on Guichet.lu, as it is indexed.
• Adequate housing: accommodation considered normal for a comparable family in the same region, with a lease or title deed to show.
• Health insurance covering every family member.

How does the process work?

1. Eligibility check. We review the sponsor's status and permit, the income over the relevant period, the housing and the family members concerned, then choose the standard or the EU Blue Card route.
2. File preparation. Foreign civil-status documents (marriage and birth certificates) with apostille and certified translation, criminal-record extracts where required, health insurance, proof of resources and of housing. Apostille and translation are the usual sources of delay.
3. Visa D application before travel. For a third-country family member joining a third-country sponsor from abroad for more than 90 days, the procedure updated on 1 October 2026 starts with a long-stay visa D application at the competent Luxembourg or Belgian consular representation. The DGIM processes complete files. The procedure differs for family members of EU/Luxembourg citizens and for some residents already in Luxembourg.
4. Arrival and residence permits. Declaration of arrival at the commune of residence, medical check and request for the residence permits, then practical settlement (health insurance registration, schools).

Can my spouse work in Luxembourg?

Family members admitted through family reunification generally have access to the labour market, and the conditions depend on the sponsor's status. For families of EU Blue Card holders, EU law provides immediate access to employment for the spouse.

Is there a faster route for EU Blue Card holders?

Yes. Under Directive (EU) 2021/1883, an EU Blue Card holder can bring family without a minimum period of residence and with facilitated conditions. This is one of the main reasons highly qualified professionals choose the Blue Card over the single work permit.

How long does family reunification take?

EU rules set a maximum of nine months for a decision once the application is complete. The real duration depends on the sponsor's status, the completeness of the civil-status file and the authorities' workload.
